STATUES AND FOUNTAINS IN RED MARBLE FROM VERONA |
The territory north of Verona with the Lessini mountains, Valpolicella and lake Garda is one of the most important marble districts in
Italy. The excavation of the precious material spans over 2000 years of history. Since Roman times caves and laboratories have been active in the hills north of Verona (Valpolicella area) as is evident in the numerous monuments obtained from such marble in the nearby city of Verona. One example is the marble used in the construction of the Roman amphitheater known as the "Arena". Many famous architects have made use of Verona's red marble such as Andrea Palladio, Jacopo Sansovino and Vincenzo Scamozzi. |
